In addition to periodic folder scans, Agents perform rescans of "hot" files and folders—those that have been accessed recently. This helps discover frequently updated files more quickly, particularly when the Agent does not receive system notifications about file updates, such as with NFS shares. This functionality is also effective for various file systems and cloud storages.
Hot scan is managed by two custom parameters, either in Agent or Job profile:
folder_rescan_interval_hot
sets the interval at which hot rescans occur. The default value is 3600 seconds (1 hour), meaning the Agent rescans "hot" files every hour. For NFS shares recommended value is 300.
transfer_job_rescan_hot_threshold
defines the age threshold for files and folders to be considered "hot." The default value is 86400 seconds (1 day). Files that are 1 day old are considered hot. Regarding folders, if any changes occur inside a subfolder (such as files being added, deleted, or renamed), the timestamps of all its parent directories are updated, making them "hot" as well.
What is the difference between periodic scan and hot scan?
Periodic and hot scans complement each other rather than interfere. Periodic scans typically run at longer intervals (24 hours by default) and thoroughly scan all files and folders. Hot scans only recheck files and folders whose timestamps fall within the configured threshold.
It is not possible to manually start a hot scan.
During a job run, an Agent reports both types of scans in the Folder scan tab, with different file counts, which is expected.
